Description
This is most probably the very first announcement of Winchester "Brush Load" shotshells. 6.5" x 7.5" unfolded. Dated 1905, which is the year that several manufacturers introduced the "Spreader" load type of shotshell, which expands the shot pattern in a full-choked gun so that closer shots could be made without destroying the gamebird. Peters ("Spreader Load") and UMC (Remington) ("Scatter Load") also introduced their own versions that year. Winchester used the cruciform Winans and Sinnock patent under royalty until they bought the patent outright. Pictured is a "Leader Brush" load, singles of which are quite scarce today (stopped in 1925). Winchester soon followed the "Leader" brush loads with "Repeater" brush loads until the mid-1930s, and then the "Ranger" brush loads finished it out until the early 1960s. External adjustable/changeable choke devices, such as the "Polychoke" and "Cutts Compensator" sounded the death knell for these kinds of shells, since both mechanisms could be factory ordered or after-market installed. The advent of internal choke tubes, beginning around 1960 for Winchester, was the final nail in the coffin for these kinds of shotshells. Winchester used the Winans and Sinnock style cruciform shot divider for all of its Brush loadings for more than 50 years, and Western Cartridge ("Thicket Load") also began to use it after it purchased Winchester in 1931 (after all, they owned the patent when they bought the company). This one is in as-new condition for a perishable piece of paper that is 113 years old. A slightly later-dated example, with noticeable less condition than this one, is pictured in the book "Winchester Rarities". I would call it ultra rare in this condition. I don't use those kinds of terms lightly. shipping to USA ONLY. No foreign sales. Item will be shipped in an archival clear preservation cover, folded.
